How Does Breast Reduction Restore Physical Comfort?
3 Minute Read:Even though most women think about breast augmentation or enlargement when it comes to cosmetic surgery for the breasts, reduction is often the more rewarding option.
This is because women who deal with overly large and heavy breasts have likely struggled with the physical and emotional aspects of this often undesirable feature for years.
Breast reduction is performed to decrease the size of cumbersome breasts and make them more proportional to the rest of the body.
What Can Heavy Breasts Contribute To?
Back Pain
One of the most common complaints women with large breasts have is back pain. While some experience pain in the upper back and others experience it in the lower back, back pain is almost always a shared complaint.
Due to the size and weight of the breasts, most women need to shift their weight and the way they carry their bodies. This changes their posture and can lead to concerns with the alignment of the spine. When this occurs, back pain usually follows.
Shoulder Pain and Grooves in the Bone
Women with heavy breasts understand how difficult it is to find a good, supportive bra that not only supports and actually covers the beasts (without unwanted popping out), but a bra that is also easy on the shoulders.
Heavy breasts weigh down the bra, and the pressure of that is all put on the straps, which, over time, actually create divots in the shoulder blades.
Chest Pain
In addition to the dull pain in the back, neck, and shoulders, some women experience sharp pains in their breasts periodically due to their overly large size.
Skin Irritations
Most women with large breasts also experience sagging. This causes the skin on the lower pole of the breasts to rub against the skin at the top of the ribcage, leading to rashes and other skin irritations below and in between the breasts.
These are not only painful but can also lead to infections and other concerns.
How Can Breast Reduction Help?
The problem with overly large breasts is their weight. Breast reduction decreases the weight of the breast by removing breast tissue and fat.
During this procedure, incisions are made around the areola, down the lower pole of the breasts, and across the inframammary fold. Incisions may be smaller depending on the amount of size reduction needed.
Through these incisions, tissue and fat are removed and a breast lift is performed to help tighten the remaining tissues, remove skin, reposition the nipple-areola complex, and sculpt the breast.
Following breast reduction, most women are thrilled with their new physique, the reduced pain in their back, neck, and chest, and the ease they experience when shopping for bras and clothing.
Does Insurance Cover Breast Reduction?
Insurance rarely covers cosmetic procedures because they are considered to be elective; however, breast reduction is sometimes one of the rare exceptions. If you can prove that your overly large breasts are contributing to unnecessary back pain, there is a chance that insurance may contribute.
You will need to contact your insurance provider to learn more.
