Labiaplasty in Westchester, NY

Women’s genitalia varies significantly for each individual, including the size of the labia. If you have an enlarged labia, you might suffer from physical discomfort or embarrassment during intimacy. Fortunately, a labiaplasty can help. Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to decrease the labia minora (inner tissues of the female genitalia) so that it is proportionate to the labia majora (outer part of the female genitalia).

There are non-surgical options to tighten the labia, but a labiaplasty offers the most dramatic results.

Am I a Candidate for Labiaplasty?

You are a good candidate for labiaplasty if:

  • You feel that your labia is too large, which results in self-confidence issues.
  • You experience physical discomfort during exercise (biking, spin class) or intimacy.
  • You don’t feel comfortable wearing specific clothing (yoga pants, fitted clothing, bathing suits, etc.).
  • You have experienced aesthetic changes to your labia due to childbirth, weight loss, or aging.

Additionally, individuals should be prepared to quit smoking for several weeks before and after the procedure. Smoking can significantly impact a patient’s recovery.

All cosmetic surgical procedures are generally recommended to individuals that are in good overall health.

Individuals should have realistic expectations for the results of the procedure. Your specific desired results can be discussed with your cosmetic surgeon.

How Is Labiaplasty Performed?

Patients may receive general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation for the procedure. A labiaplasty involves shortening or reshaping the labia minora. The surgeon will use a scalpel to remove the excess tissue and then stitch the patient back up with dissolvable stitches. The entire procedure takes between one and two hours, and patients usually go home the same day.

Labiaplasty is usually performed through one of two methods:

  • Trim method: An incision is made along the edge of the labia lip, through which tissue is removed.
  • Wedge method: A “V-shaped” wedge of tissue is removed from each of the labia lips

What Is My Labiaplasty Recovery Like?

After your labiaplasty, you may experience some discomfort, pain, and swelling. Pain medication will be prescribed for pain management. You may use cold compresses to help with the itching and swelling.

Women can return to work approximately one to two weeks post-surgery; however, you will need to avoid physical activity, including sex, for six weeks.

Your surgeon will give you more detailed instructions and will check in on your recovery progress.

What Results Can I Expect From Labiaplasty?

You will start to notice your results, including a tighter, more proportionate vulva immediately, which will continue to improve over the following days, weeks, and months as your swelling subsides.

Some of the results of the labiaplasty can be:

  • Reduced excess skin
  • Improvement in the appearance of the labia minora
  • Improved clitoral hooding
  • Increased self-confidence
  • Reduced discomfort during physical activity or intimacy

Labiaplasty offers long-term, if not permanent, results. This procedure does not halt the natural aging process. You may develop additional laxity in the vulva region with age or in response to an additional pregnancy.
