Clitoral Hood Reduction in Westchester, NY

Excess folds of the clitoral hood can create a bulge that creates an imbalance in the appearance of the female genitalia. With time, childbirth, aging, weight fluctuations, or trauma, the skin surrounding the clitoris can become elongated, resulting in reduced sensitivity and a disproportionate appearance.

Fortunately, there are options available to reduce the length, width, or protrusion of the clitoral hood. A clitoral hood reduction, commonly performed alongside a labiaplasty, can help women reduce physical discomfort and achieve the look and feel they want.

Am I a Candidate for Clitoral Hood Reduction?

If you dread physical intimacy or feel self-conscious due to an enlarged clitoral hood, you may be a candidate for clitoral hood reduction. A clitoral hood reduction can be beneficial for individuals seeking to promote sexual confidence and pleasure or address discomfort issues when exercising or wearing certain clothing.

The best candidates for the procedure should also be in overall good health, not smoke, and have a realistic expectation for the surgery’s outcome.

How Is Clitoral Hood Reduction Performed?

Before your surgery, Dr. Rita Shats at Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts will evaluate all aspects of your vaginal area to determine the best approach for trimming the excess clitoral hood.

During the procedure, a local anesthetic, along with oral sedation, is administered for increased comfort. The incisions to remove the excess tissue and skin will be made according to the individual’s anatomy—i.e., the shape and extent of folds.

If a clitoral hood reduction is being conducted along with labiaplasty, the incision for labiaplasty is extended into a Y extension to reduce redundant skin above the clitoris and make the clitoral hood more balanced with the labia minora.

The surgery takes between 45 minutes to two hours and uses dissolvable sutures to close the incisions.

What Is My Clitoral Hood Recovery Like?

Following the surgery, patients are allowed to go home with a detailed aftercare plan from our surgeon. You can expect to experience mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising. Further, prescription medication is given to help with pain relief.

It is recommended to take a two or three-day rest period and avoid sex for up to six weeks. Patients can resume light activities after a week and will be expected to keep up with follow up visits. Scars tend to heal well and will be hidden once fully recovered.

Generally, recovery will vary depending on the extent of surgery, but most patients recover in six to eight weeks.

What Results Can I Expect From My Clitoral Hood Reduction?

After the procedure, individuals enjoy the benefits of a reduced clitoral hood, which may include:

  • Improved genital aesthetics
  • Improved confidence and self-image
  • Improved comfort
  • Increased sensation during sexual intercourse
