Breast Revision in Westchester, NY

Are you looking to change or improve the appearance of your breast implants?

Many women choose breast augmentation surgery to enhance the size of their breasts and increase their internal sense of self-beauty. A common misunderstanding about breast implants is that they last forever; however, in reality, the implant is not permanent. Breast implants usually have a warranty of ten years in most cases. As a result, it is possible that you may want or be forced to revise a previous breast augmentation.

Breast revision is a secondary breast enhancement surgery that removes and replaces damaged or unwanted implants to restore breast aesthetics and health.

Dr. Karlinsky is dedicated to helping women in Westchester improve the size, shape, projection, and symmetry of their breasts with a revision procedure.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Implant Revision?

Breast implant revision is performed for both medical and cosmetic reasons. An ideal breast revision candidate should be in good health and have realistic expectations of their results. Breast revision patients will need to quit smoking for at least 10 to 14 days before and after their surgery.

Common reasons for undertaking this procedure include:

  • A desire to change the size of the breasts
  • Capsular contracture
  • A ruptured or leaking implant
  • Implant displacement
  • Implant rippling
  • A wish to return to a natural breast aesthetic

How Is Breast Implant Revision Performed?

During your consultation, Dr. Karlinsky will discuss your expectations for breast revision, review your medical records and previous surgeries, and create a customized plan for your revision.

Breast implant revision is performed under general anesthesia for your comfort and safety. Depending on your aesthetic goals, your breast implants may be removed permanently, replaced with new, healthier implants, or removed and followed with a breast lift.

Breast revision surgery can take anywhere from one to one and a half hours, depending on the specific style of revision needed. Breast revision should be performed by a well-trained and board-certified cosmetic surgeon with significant experience in the area.

Where Will My Breast Revision Incisions Be Made?

Dr. Karlinsky will always attempt to use your initial breast augmentation incision to minimize the development of future scarring. This can usually be accomplished with patients that have an inframammary incision (along the breast crease) or a periareolar incision (around the areola).

If the initial incision cannot be used, an incision will be made along the inframammary fold.

Do I Need to Replace My Breast Implants?

While most women choose to replace their implants during a breast revision, it is not required to do so. Women who no longer wish to have their implants can remove them permanently. During the process, your old implants will be removed, the breast pocket tightened, and the incisions closed.

Women who do choose to replace their implants can choose identical ones or ones of a different size, shape, or filling material.

Will I Need a Breast Lift After Breast Revision?

Many women benefit from a combined breast lift. Breast lift surgery raises and elevates sagging breasts that have been worsened by the removal of a heavy breast implant. Breast lift surgery can be performed with or without the replacement of an implant.

Additional incisions may be required.

What Is My Breast Revision Recovery Like?

Breast revision is an outpatient procedure, and you can return home to begin your recovery period as soon as the anesthesia wears off.

While the extent of your recovery period will depend on the extent of corrections performed, patients can expect their breasts to be bruised, swollen, tender, and sore. A compression garment may be wrapped around the breasts to promote circulation, facilitate healing, and ensure the breasts heal in the correct shape.

Most patients can return to work within a few days but should refrain from heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for at least three to four weeks.

What Results Can I Expect From Breast Revision Surgery?

Patients will start to see their results immediately following their revision, which will continue to improve as the bruising and swelling subside, and the new implants settle (if implants were replaced).

Breast revision patients can expect to achieve a healthier, youthful, and more aesthetically pleasing bustline after their surgery.
