Should You Add an Arm Lift to Your Tummy Tuck Procedure?
Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, can significantly improve your appearance and self-confidence by targeting stubborn belly fat and excess skin that otherwise resists diet and exercise.
However, loose, sagging skin on the arms can detract from the improvements you might have hoped for with the tummy tuck alone.
So, should you add an arm lift to your tummy tuck for an all-over transformation?
This blog will discuss two procedures — the tummy tuck and the arm lift — and how they can be paired together, their benefits, and what results you can expect.
What Is Abdominoplasty?
The pockets of fat and excess skin around the belly and midsection are challenging to eliminate, even with strict diet and exercise. Pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and aging all affect the look and feel of your midsection. Trying to eliminate unwanted fat in this area can be frustrating, and sometimes it’s nearly impossible if your abdominal muscles have been separated and weakened.
A tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure in which your board-certified cosmetic surgeon removes unwanted fat through liposuction and trims excess skin before tightening the abdominal muscles.
At Westchester Surgical Arts, patients have a few options to choose from when it comes to abdominoplasty. Alternatively, you may opt for a mini-abdominoplasty, which is less invasive and ideal for patients with less fat and loose skin in the lower abdomen.
How Long Is Tummy Tuck Recovery?
As with most cosmetic procedures, recovery time varies between patients. The surgery incorporates your abdomen and midsection, so moving around immediately after a tummy tuck can be difficult.
Most people return to work after about 10 days, but some prefer to take up to a month off, depending on the level of physical activity involved.
It takes around three months to see the full results of your tummy tuck when the swelling has fully subsided.
What Is Arm Lift Surgery?
Loose, sagging skin around the arms and underarms (sometimes called bat wings”) can be a detriment to your self-confidence and comfort — especially in the summer months. Many people who dislike the appearance of their arms due to stubborn fat and skin resort to wearing long-sleeved and bulky clothing even when the weather is hot.
Brachioplasty (arm lift surgery) targets the lax, sagging skin and fat pockets in the upper arms. Similar to the tummy tuck procedure, an arm lift is performed by a board-certified cosmetic surgeon who will make an incision on the underside of the arm, trim the excess skin, and remove unwanted fat using liposuction.
How Long Is Arm Lift Surgery Recovery?
After your procedure, dressings or bandages may be applied to the incision area. You may also be fitted with a compression garment, which minimizes swelling and supports the surgical site and surrounding area. Each patient is different, but you can expect to take four to six weeks to heal from arm lift surgery.
Tummy Tuck and Brachioplasty Results
Both procedures aim to tone and contour specific areas of the body that are otherwise resistant to exercise. While brachioplasty does not manipulate the muscles in the arm, it does expose them, giving off the appearance of a more toned upper arm (since there will be less fat and loose skin hiding their contour). Similarly, the tummy tuck eliminates protruding bellies or “pouches” that are stubborn, revealing a toned, contoured abdomen.
Tummy tuck and arm lift procedures are not weight-loss solutions. They require that patients be healthy and near their ideal weight. Once you undergo a tummy tuck or arm lift, excess skin and pockets of fat will be removed, and you will have the opportunity to tone and build muscle.
At Westchester Surgical Arts, you can design your dream body. Your board-certified cosmetic surgeon will walk you through the process of each procedure in your consultation, where you can plan your arm lift surgery and tummy tuck. Take a look at our before and after gallery to see some of the results our experienced surgeons have created.

Giving birth to children is one of the most rewarding experiences a woman can have. That being said, pregnancy and breastfeeding can have a significant negative impact on the body. Luckily, the Mommy Makeover is a package designed to give mothers their confidence back post-pregnancy. A Mommy Makeover is typically a combination of a tummy tuck, liposuction, breast augmentation, and a breast lift. It’s a mixture of body contouring and breast improvement procedures. These surgeries look to reverse some of the changes brought on by motherhood.
Am I a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?
Any mother ready for a slimmer, tighter appearance is a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover. Patients should be in generally good health, have realistic expectations about their results, and should be prepared to quit smoking before the surgery and during recovery.
Women should be finished breastfeeding if they wish to have breast augmentation and breast lift. The earliest a woman can have a Mommy Makeover after childbirth is six months.
If you have plans for another pregnancy in the near future, you may want to postpone your Mommy Makeover until after that pregnancy is complete.
How Can I Prepare for My Mommy Makeover Procedure?
Your surgeon will tell you how to prepare for your procedure, but the most common instructions include:
- Staying relatively healthy before surgery
- Quitting smoking and any blood-thinning medication before surgery
- Arranging a ride to and from the hospital
- Planning adequate time to recover
- Arranging for help with regular activities, such as childcare, so that you can recover and rest
Can I Customize My Mommy Makeover?
Yes, many women choose to customize their Mommy Makeover. For example, popular add-ons include the Brazilian Butt Lift. Alternatively, some women decide to opt-out of breast augmentation and only get the breast lift.
How Is the Mommy Makeover Performed?
You can customize your Mommy Makeover procedure to add or remove surgeries based on your preferences. During your consultation, your surgeon will advise if your procedures will be performed all at once or in multiple operations. If the surgeries need to be split up, the cosmetic surgeon will recommend an order for which operations are performed first.
What Is Mommy Makeover Recovery Like?
Mommy Makeover recovery varies depending on the combination of procedures you chose. Patients should expect to experience some swelling and bruising at the incision sites. Pain can be addressed with over-the-counter pain medication.
It’s crucial to give yourself enough time to rest and properly recover. You will have to avoid strenuous activities for a minimum of six weeks after surgery. Light walking should start early on to promote a quick recovery.
You will have check-ins with your board-certified cosmetic surgeon at Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts, who will analyze your recovery progress and make suggestions along the way.
What Results Can I Expect From a Mommy Makeover?
It may take up to several months to see the full results of your Mommy Makeover. Over time, the implants will settle, contours will form, and scars will fade, leaving you with a beautiful silhouette.

Are you looking to change or improve the appearance of your breast implants?
Many women choose breast augmentation surgery to enhance the size of their breasts and increase their internal sense of self-beauty. A common misunderstanding about breast implants is that they last forever; however, in reality, the implant is not permanent. Breast implants usually have a warranty of ten years in most cases. As a result, it is possible that you may want or be forced to revise a previous breast augmentation.
Breast revision is a secondary breast enhancement surgery that removes and replaces damaged or unwanted implants to restore breast aesthetics and health.
Dr. Karlinsky is dedicated to helping women in Westchester improve the size, shape, projection, and symmetry of their breasts with a revision procedure.
Am I a Candidate for Breast Implant Revision?
Breast implant revision is performed for both medical and cosmetic reasons. An ideal breast revision candidate should be in good health and have realistic expectations of their results. Breast revision patients will need to quit smoking for at least 10 to 14 days before and after their surgery.
Common reasons for undertaking this procedure include:
- A desire to change the size of the breasts
- Capsular contracture
- A ruptured or leaking implant
- Implant displacement
- Implant rippling
- A wish to return to a natural breast aesthetic
How Is Breast Implant Revision Performed?
During your consultation, Dr. Karlinsky will discuss your expectations for breast revision, review your medical records and previous surgeries, and create a customized plan for your revision.
Breast implant revision is performed under general anesthesia for your comfort and safety. Depending on your aesthetic goals, your breast implants may be removed permanently, replaced with new, healthier implants, or removed and followed with a breast lift.
Breast revision surgery can take anywhere from one to one and a half hours, depending on the specific style of revision needed. Breast revision should be performed by a well-trained and board-certified cosmetic surgeon with significant experience in the area.
Where Will My Breast Revision Incisions Be Made?
Dr. Karlinsky will always attempt to use your initial breast augmentation incision to minimize the development of future scarring. This can usually be accomplished with patients that have an inframammary incision (along the breast crease) or a periareolar incision (around the areola).
If the initial incision cannot be used, an incision will be made along the inframammary fold.
Do I Need to Replace My Breast Implants?
While most women choose to replace their implants during a breast revision, it is not required to do so. Women who no longer wish to have their implants can remove them permanently. During the process, your old implants will be removed, the breast pocket tightened, and the incisions closed.
Women who do choose to replace their implants can choose identical ones or ones of a different size, shape, or filling material.
Will I Need a Breast Lift After Breast Revision?
Many women benefit from a combined breast lift. Breast lift surgery raises and elevates sagging breasts that have been worsened by the removal of a heavy breast implant. Breast lift surgery can be performed with or without the replacement of an implant.
Additional incisions may be required.
What Is My Breast Revision Recovery Like?
Breast revision is an outpatient procedure, and you can return home to begin your recovery period as soon as the anesthesia wears off.
While the extent of your recovery period will depend on the extent of corrections performed, patients can expect their breasts to be bruised, swollen, tender, and sore. A compression garment may be wrapped around the breasts to promote circulation, facilitate healing, and ensure the breasts heal in the correct shape.
Most patients can return to work within a few days but should refrain from heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for at least three to four weeks.
What Results Can I Expect From Breast Revision Surgery?
Patients will start to see their results immediately following their revision, which will continue to improve as the bruising and swelling subside, and the new implants settle (if implants were replaced).
Breast revision patients can expect to achieve a healthier, youthful, and more aesthetically pleasing bustline after their surgery.

Next Page »Thigh Lift in Westchester, NY
If you have recently lost a significant amount of weight, you probably look and feel great. However, you may have excess skin around your thighs that you would rather be rid of.
Thigh lift surgery tightens or eliminates sagging skin and fat on the thigh region to bring your thighs into proportion with your new body contours.
Am I a Candidate for Thigh Lift Surgery?
Thigh lift surgery is a safe procedure that produces effective results for patients who are displeased by the look and firmness of their upper thighs. This procedure is common after significant weight loss has resulted in loose or lax tissues.
Candidates for thigh lift surgery do not smoke, are in good overall health, and have realistic expectations of their results.
Some patients may be better suited for an additional or alternative body contouring procedure, such as body lift surgery or tummy tuck surgery. Dr. Karlinsky will recommend the best surgical procedure(s) for you during your consultation.
How Is Thigh Lift Surgery Performed?
Thigh lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia in roughly two to four hours. Your thigh lift technique will be dependent on the extent of excess skin and fat, and this technique will be discussed during your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Karlinsky.
What Is a Vertical Thigh Lift?
The vertical thigh lift addresses sagging skin and excess fat on the inner and outer thighs. An incision is made on the inside of the thigh that begins in the groin area and extends downward. The length of the incision will depend on the amount of tissue laxity.
Liposuction may be combined with this procedure to eliminate stubborn pockets of fat on the inner and outer thighs.
What Is a Medial Thigh Lift?
A medial thigh lift addresses the inner and outer thighs as well as the back and the front of the thighs. This 360-degree thigh correction involves an incision that runs around the groin area.
Liposuction may be combined to remove stubborn pockets of unwanted fat.
What Is My Thigh Lift Recovery Like?
Thigh lift surgery is an outpatient procedure, and you will be able to return home on the day of your surgery. While you will be able to walk on your own, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home and help around the house for the first two days.
Most patients take up to two weeks off of work and their normal activities to recover. While you will want to rest as much as possible, it is essential to get on your feet for leisurely walks around your house or neighborhood. This will ensure proper blood circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots. You can resume all strenuous activity after four to six weeks.
Depending on the type of thigh lift you underwent, you may develop scarring along the groin area or on the inside of the upper thighs. These scars will fade with time.
What Results Can I Expect From a Thigh Lift?
Your thigh lift will start to produce results immediately, which will continue to improve over the following weeks and months. You will notice an improvement in the way your skin feels and looks. Best of all, the loose, saggy skin and pockets of fat are gone.
Natural sagging may occur with age. However, the results of your thigh lift are typically long lasting, barring significant weight gain.

Achieving your weight loss goal can improve your physical and mental health, but it can also leave you with excess skin and fat. A body lift is performed used to remove unwanted tissue from the body following a significant weight loss, such as from bariatric surgery or multiple pregnancies.
Am I a Candidate for a Body Lift?
While body lift candidacy varies from patient to patient, the best candidates for a body lift are generally healthy adults who have a large amount of sagging skin in one or more areas of their body as a result of a dramatic weight loss.
It is recommended that bariatric surgery patients wait until their weight has stabilized before undergoing a body lift. This helps to achieve the best possible outcomes from the cosmetic procedures.
How Is a Body Lift Performed?
A body lift is a combination of cosmetic surgeries that may be performed at the same time or divided into two or more surgical sessions.
Excess skin on the lower areas of the body can be addressed with a lower body lift. A lower body lift can include butt augmentation with a Brazilian Butt Lift, thigh lift surgery, and tummy tuck surgery to address a loose midsection.
To correct issues on the upper body, such as sagging skin on the upper arms, an arm lift may be performed to restore definition. You may also benefit from a breast lift to address sagging breasts and a back lift to remove excess skin on the back.
Liposuction techniques can be applied to the midsection, chest, and lower extremities during a body lift to remove localized pockets of diet and exercise-resistant fat. This procedure permanently removes fatty deposits on any of the above areas.
What Is Body Lift Recovery Like?
The body lift recovery depends on the overall health of the patient, the amount of skin and tissue that is removed, and whether or not multiple procedures are performed during a single surgical session.
In general, most patients who have their body lift done in stages can resume most activities within one to two weeks, while patients who undergo a total body lift can expect a significantly longer recovery time. Patients who have a full body lift will also need to remain in the hospital for at least 24 to 48 hours following their surgery.
Staged procedures are usually done on an outpatient basis.
Compression garments may be wrapped around the treatment areas after your body lift. These garments will protect the incisions, promote blood circulation, and reduce swelling. Body lift patients will need some assistance around the house initially to help with all day-to-day chores like cooking, cleaning, or childcare.
What Results Can I Expect From a Body Lift?
Body lift results are immediate and dramatic. You will be able to see and feel the effects as soon as you wake up from your procedure. Once the usual post-operative swelling goes down, you will have noticeably tighter skin, more defined features, and freedom from the unsightly and uncomfortable excess skin and tissue that was removed by your cosmetic surgeon.

Everyone wants to look their best and feel confident in their body. While some can achieve a more desirable butt at the gym, there are limits to what exercise can do for the derrière.
A Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is a minimally invasive procedure that transfers excess and unwanted fat from neighboring regions of the body to the butt. This serves to augment the size and shape of the buttocks to provide a sculpted and lifted butt shape. The procedure does not use implants, making the final results look and feel more natural than other forms of buttock augmentation.
Am I a Candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift?
Women turn to the Brazilian Butt Lift to enlarge, shape, and lift their butts while slimming and toning the surrounding areas. While candidacy varies from patient to patient, Brazilian Butt Lift candidates generally do not smoke, are in good overall health, have good skin elasticity, and maintain realistic expectations for their results.
Women considering this procedure must have enough fat storage in other parts of their body to transfer to the buttocks.
How Is the Brazilian Butt Lift Performed?
A Brazilian Butt Lift starts by removing unwanted fat from various parts of the body, such as the thighs, hips, arms, or abdomen. Fat is removed via liposuction, processed using a centrifuge, and repurposed to fill the buttocks area through a series of injections. These injections result in a rounder and perkier buttocks shape.
This procedure can take between two and four hours. The length will depend on how much enhancement is needed and the number of harvesting areas.
What Is Brazilian Butt Lift Recovery Like?
The Brazilian Butt Lift is an outpatient procedure, and you will be cleared to go home shortly after your surgery. You will have to follow strict instructions for your recovery process. This will include having a friend or family member drive you home, taking one to two weeks off of work, and avoiding any direct pressure to the buttocks for at least weeks.
Avoiding pressure means that you cannot sit or lay directly on your butt. You can invest in a Brazilian Butt Lift pillow that will surround the buttocks and aid in the recovery process.
The pain level should be minimal but can vary from patient to patient. Your surgeon at Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts can provide you with a prescription for painkillers, or you can choose an over-the-counter pain medication like TYLENOL®.
Patients can resume light physical activity—such as walking—right away. Taking walks will help to stimulate blood flow, which speeds the healing process.
As the Brazilian Butt Lift is a surgical procedure, there is a risk of bleeding, infection, adverse reactions to the anesthesia, and fat absorption. You should notify your doctor immediately if you experience unwanted side effects.
What Results Can I Expect From Brazilian Butt Lift?
The results of your Brazilian Butt Lift will continue to improve over the following weeks as the swelling subsides, and the transferred fat settles.
A successful Brazilian Butt Lift will leave you with a perkier and curvier backside as well as a firmer body contour. After the fat settles and the initial absorption takes place, it is unlikely for the remaining fat to be absorbed. This allows your results to be long lasting. You can maintain these results by following a healthy lifestyle and remaining at a stable weight.

Losing weight is great for your health and your overall body image, but extreme weight loss may leave you with sagging, loose skin in areas such as your upper arms. Excess tissue in the arms can be uncomfortable and unsightly and is often very difficult to remove with diet and exercise.
Whether your loose skin is due to weight loss or the result of the natural aging process, an arm lift can restore a more toned and youthful arm contour by trimming away unwanted skin and fat. While this procedure does not build muscles, your existing arm muscles will be on full display, providing a more fit and healthy appearance.
Am I a Candidate for an Arm Lift?
Men and women turn to arm lift surgery to reduce the circumference of their arms and to restore a more defined contour.
Candidates for arm lift surgery do not smoke, are in good overall health with no pre-existing medical conditions that can affect their ability to heal, and have realistic expectations.
This surgical procedure can benefit men and women with a large amount of tissue laxity in their upper arms.
How is the Arm Lift Procedure Performed?
At Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts, your arm lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
An incision is made on the underside of your arm, starting at the armpit and finishing at the elbow. Excess skin is trimmed, and localized fat is removed via liposuction. Incisions are neatly closed to minimize the appearance of post-surgical scarring.
Your arm lift surgery is an outpatient procedure that usually takes between two and three hours to perform.
What Is the Arm Lift Recovery Like?
Most patients will stay in recovery for a few hours until the effects of the anesthesia wear off.
The incisions will be covered with bandages and dressings, and the arms may be wrapped with compression garments. These dressings will protect the healing incisions, promote blood circulation, and reduce swelling.
Patients can usually return to office-style jobs within one week; however, more strenuous jobs may require a longer period as you will not be able to lift anything over a few pounds for four to six weeks.
What Results Can I Expect from an Arm Lift Procedure?
Results are noticeable immediately following the surgery but will continue to improve as the incisions heal and the swelling subsides. This can take several weeks.
Aging will cause a natural reduction in skin elasticity, which can result in minor sagging over time, but the effect will be much less following an arm lift. You can help maintain your results by following a proper diet and exercise routine.
Interested in an Arm Lift in Westchester, NY?
If you want to hear more about the cost or details of an arm lift surgery in Westchester, New York, call us today at (646) 559-2854 or fill out our online contact form. We are happy to meet with you to determine if you are a candidate.
Next Page »The Top 5 Cosmetic Surgeries in 2018
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently released the 2018 statistics for cosmetic procedures in the United States, which totals 17.7 million. Minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures such as dermal fillers and chemical peels make up the bulk of that number with 15.9 million treatments in 2018, with the remaining 1.8 million being cosmetic surgical procedures. The top five cosmetic surgeries in 2018 include:
1. Breast Augmentation
There were 313,735 breast augmentation procedures in 2018. This cosmetic surgery enhances breast size with saline or silicone breast implants or the newer, fat transfer method that utilizes fat from another area of your body. Women often choose breast augmentation to correct congenital conditions such as breast asymmetry and tuberous breasts or to increase their self-esteem and body confidence.
2. Liposuction
Lipo can contour nearly every area of your body from addressing a double chin to getting rid of the dreaded “love handles.” Liposuction can also be utilized for male breast reduction to address gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) as well as collecting fat deposits for the Brazilian Butt Lift and fat transfer breast augmentation. At Westchester Surgical Arts, we offer traditional liposuction, Lunchtime Lipo, and Tickle Lipo. There were 258,558 liposuction procedures in 2018.
3. Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)
Commonly referred to as a “nose job,” the rhinoplasty surgically alters the size and/or shape of the nose for medical or cosmetic reasons. This includes narrowing or widening the nostrils, addressing a bump on the bridge of the nose, and correcting a crooked nose. The rhinoplasty procedure can involve altering the bone in the upper portion of the nose, cartilage, and/or skin tissue. There were 213,780 rhinoplasties in 2018.
4. Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Blepharoplasty is performed for medical or cosmetic reasons and addresses drooping eyelids, which can impact your vision, making it difficult to read, write, or drive. This face procedure may involve removing excess skin tissue, fat, and repositioning the muscles to restore taut eyelids. There were 206, 529 eyelid surgeries performed in 2018.
5. Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
The tummy tuck is a popular procedure among women and men. The full tummy tuck removes excess skin tissue and fat deposits from the upper and lower abdomen while also repositioning abdominal muscles that have stretched due to pregnancy or significant weight gain. The mini-abdominoplasty addresses excess skin tissue in the lower abdomen below the belly button. This body procedure is often combined with liposuction and breast surgery for a mommy makeover.

Cosmetic Surgeries We Offer
Dr. Victoria Karlinsky-Bellini is a triple board-certified surgeon who takes pride in helping men and women look and feel their best. The cosmetic surgeries we offer include:
Face Surgery
We offer the facelift procedure and minimally-invasive treatments to restore and rejuvenate the face. The facelift can address several issues and has come a long way since the “frozen look” associated with facelift results in the past. This face surgery focuses on restoring lost volume to the face, reducing deep folds, lines, and wrinkles, removing excess skin, and contouring the jowls (or double chin).
Breast Surgery
Breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery in the United States. Hundreds of thousands have this breast surgery each year to increase the size and reshape the breasts using saline or silicone breast implants. Breast augmentation is often combined with a breast lift to provide the best results. We also offer breast reduction for women who struggle with large breasts and also men who have gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts).
Body Surgery
Body surgery encompasses a variety of cosmetic surgeries designed to reshape or restore an area with unwanted fat or loose, sagging skin. These procedures include:
- Liposuction: We offer traditional liposuction as well as Lunchtime Lipo and Tickle Lipo which are less invasive fat removal methods. Liposuction can remove unwanted fat cells from many areas from the neck and chin to the calves. The removed fat cells are gone for good, but you can still gain weight in other areas. Lipo is not a weight loss solution nor does it address cellulite.
- Body Contouring: Body contouring includes the thigh lift, arm lift, body lift, and the Brazilian Butt Lift. These procedures remove excess skin and residual fat to reposition and reshape troublesome areas. The Brazilian Butt Lift is a unique procedure as it uses fat transferred from another area of your body to increase the size and contour the buttocks.
- Tummy Tuck: We offer the full abdominoplasty and the mini tummy tuck. The tummy tuck addresses loose abdominal muscles and excess skin tissue in the upper and lower abdomen, which is typically caused by childbearing or massive weight loss. The mini-abdominoplasty focuses on the lower abdomen beneath the belly button.
These body surgeries can be performed as standalone procedures or combined to address several cosmetic concerns at once such as the “mommy makeover,” which often involves liposuction, tummy tuck, and a breast surgery such as breast augmentation or breast lift.

Many men and women struggle to slim and tone their overall figure, particularly after significant weight loss or pregnancy. What is Liposuction?
Lipo is not a weight loss operation or solution to diet and exercise. It is a body contouring procedure customized to your aesthetic goals. Liposuction is a surgical way to remove unwanted fat to slim and reshape specific body areas and provide a proportionate, contoured figure.
Dr. Karlinsky is a highly-skilled cosmetic surgeon who offers fat reduction in multiple areas with liposuction including:
- Chin, neck, and face
- Arms
- Abdomen and “love handles”
- Back
- Buttocks
- Thighs
- Calves
- Ankles
Liposuction can be paired with other procedures such as breast surgery or the Brazilian Butt Lift. The fat removed during the lipo procedure is re-introduced into the breasts or buttocks to reshape and “lift” the area. For our New York clients looking for minimal fat reduction, Dr. Karlinsky also offers Tickle Lipo, or “Lunchtime Lipo,” which requires less time and recovery than traditional liposuction.
The fat cells removed during liposuction will not grow back in the treated areas, which makes this procedure a great solution to stubborn fat that just won’t go away with diet and exercise. While the fat that is removed is gone for good, you can still gain weight in untreated areas. Lipo is a fat-removal technique only and can’t address cellulite or excess skin.
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) combined with liposuction can eliminate loose skin if you struggle with sagging skin after pregnancy or weight loss. A Mommy Makeover is another combination procedure that involves liposuction, abdominoplasty, and breast surgery to restore your body shape and confidence after having children.

Who is a Candidate for Liposuction?
Most people with areas of unwanted fat qualify for liposuction, but it’s important to have realistic expectations for what we can accomplish with this cosmetic surgery. The ideal liposuction candidate is within 10-15 pounds of his or her goal weight and in good overall health. If you’re a smoker, you will need to quit prior to your liposuction through recovery. Some medications may need to be discontinued. As with any invasive procedure, there are potential risks such as infection and bleeding, fluid collection, and skin irregularities. Dr. Karlinsky will discuss your options, details of the procedure, and any risks during your consultation.
The Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction surgery takes 60-90 minutes from start to finish for most of our patients. If you choose to target multiple body areas at once with liposuction, your session time will be longer. During the lipo procedure, Dr. Karlinsky uses tumescent anesthesia—A numbing agent made up of salt water, lidocaine, and epinephrine (adrenaline)—to constrict the small blood vessels in the fat and reduce blood loss. This makes for a faster recovery and less painful procedure. Many of Dr. Karlinsky’s patients report feeling mild discomfort and a vibrating or tickling sensation in the treated body part as she reshapes the problem areas.
However, patients looking for significant fat removal will need to go under general anesthesia so your liposuction treatment will take place at our Manhattan surgical center. Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts provides transportation to and from our Manhattan office so you can focus on preparing and recovering from liposuction. Both forms of liposuction are outpatient procedures, so there’s no overnight stay required, but you will need to have someone available to drive you home and help you get settled.
What to Expect During Liposuction Recovery
You’ll likely feel mild to moderate pain following liposuction, and you may be sore for several weeks, but most patients go back to work within two or three days. If your profession involves heavy lifting or labor, Dr. Karlinsky may recommend taking a week away to allow your body to heal correctly. There will be a surgical garment which you need to wear for three weeks full time and another three weeks part-time. This helps your skin heal and provides a pain management benefit as well.
You’ll come into Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts for a follow-up appointment 24 hours after your cosmetic surgery to monitor how you’re doing and identify any issues immediately. Dr. Karlinsky gives her personal phone number to patients to maintain communication as complications can often be avoided when we’re both staying on top of your liposuction recovery. There’s another follow-up visit after one week and at three months, which is when Dr. Karlinsky will take your after photos.
There are a few ways you can prepare yourself and your home for liposuction recovery such as making and freezing nutritious meals ahead of time and creating a cozy area in the living room or bedroom where you can rest. Ask a friend or family member to drive you home the day of surgery and stay with you for the first day or so. If you have children, arrange for more help around the house so you can focus on healing and avoid putting too much strain on your body.
What is Tickle Lipo and Lunchtime Lipo?
Men and women who have small areas of unwanted fat may qualify to have Tickle Lipo. Dr. Karlinsky has coined the term “Lunchtime Lipo” because liposuction treatments with local, tumescent anesthesia can often be done over your lunch break at our Westchester location and you can return to work afterward. The Tickle Lipo is a cold lipo, not a laser, so there’s no risk of burn. The cannula used by our cosmetic surgeon moves up, down, and sideways quickly, creating vibrations that may tickle and allow it to move through the tissues easily. That causes less trauma and leads to less blood loss and pain during recovery.
Lunchtime Lipo is best for those who have localized areas of stubborn fat. You’ll need to avoid running and lifting heavy objects for one week, but most Tickle Lipo patients can return to normal activities after that. This liposuction option allows you to achieve your ideal figure on your lunch break without having to miss work.
What to Expect During Tickle Lipo Recovery
Recovery from Tickle Lipo is less extensive than traditional liposuction because it’s done over your lunch break and you can return to work. The procedure takes between one and two hours depending on the treated area(s), but there are no stitches required, just a band-aid and the incision site usually heals within 48 hours. You’ll still need to wear a surgical garment for one week full time and one week part time and stay in contact with Dr. Karlinsky about your progress.
