Will Sexual Wellness Surgeries Reduce Sensation?

2 Minute Read:

Pain and discomfort during sex top the list of reasons women undergo sexual wellness surgery. While 30 to 40 percent of women experience sexual dysfunction, many feel reluctant to have helpful procedures done.

One of the main points of anxiety is the potential that sexual wellness surgeries could reduce feelings of pleasure and stimulation.

While there is never a 100 percent guarantee that no reduction in sensation can occur, the risk of loss is smaller than you think.

How Can Sexual Wellness Surgeries Help You and Avoid Nerve Damage?

Labiaplasty

An enlarged labia can be both a cosmetic and painful problem during exercise and intimacy.

It’s natural to be nervous about labiaplasty. The amount of nerve endings in the labia can make this procedure seem scary, but modern surgical techniques have become precise enough to avoid nerve damage.

In a study from the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, doctors assessed that major nerve bundles are found along the labia’s outer edge. With the wedge method of surgery, removing a central portion of tissue avoids nerves, while the trim method circumvents them.

After these sometimes painful bundles of skin are removed, you may even experience better sensation after surgery as the discomfort of the enlarged labia is alleviated.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

Often done with labiaplasties, clitoral hood reductions now follow similar conservative guidelines.

Small incisions can be made around the excess skin, once again avoiding the bundle of nerves in and around the clitoris. While there could be a small risk of nerve damage, modern clitoral hood treatment bypasses major nerve centers.

Additionally, since an enlarged clitoral hood often hides the clitoris, reducing tissue can allow better clitoral stimulation and, therefore, increased sensation.

Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty aims to tighten the canal, often after childbirth or prolapse, by removing excess skin and tightening muscles.

Since this procedure is generally an internal surgery, it avoids the nerves of the clitoris and labia. In addition, a study of 78 women found that all participants reported greater sexual pleasure after the procedure.

Vaginal Relaxation

Treatments for vaginismus (the unwanted tightening of vaginal muscles) are perhaps the least invasive methods discussed here.

Through therapy, Kegel exercises, counseling, and sometimes BOTOX®, you might find relief from vaginal spasms and tension. With these non-surgical methods, reduced pleasure from nerve damage is almost nonexistent, while the various approaches can increase stimulation.
