What is Liposuction?
Lipo is not a weight loss operation or solution to diet and exercise. It is a body contouring procedure customized to your aesthetic goals. Liposuction is a surgical way to remove unwanted fat to slim and reshape specific body areas and provide a proportionate, contoured figure.
Dr. Karlinsky is a highly-skilled cosmetic surgeon who offers fat reduction in multiple areas with liposuction including:
- Chin, neck, and face
- Arms
- Abdomen and “love handles”
- Back
- Buttocks
- Thighs
- Calves
- Ankles
Liposuction can be paired with other procedures such as breast surgery or the Brazilian Butt Lift. The fat removed during the lipo procedure is re-introduced into the breasts or buttocks to reshape and “lift” the area. For our New York clients looking for minimal fat reduction, Dr. Karlinsky also offers Tickle Lipo, or “Lunchtime Lipo,” which requires less time and recovery than traditional liposuction.
The fat cells removed during liposuction will not grow back in the treated areas, which makes this procedure a great solution to stubborn fat that just won’t go away with diet and exercise. While the fat that is removed is gone for good, you can still gain weight in untreated areas. Lipo is a fat-removal technique only and can’t address cellulite or excess skin.
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) combined with liposuction can eliminate loose skin if you struggle with sagging skin after pregnancy or weight loss. A Mommy Makeover is another combination procedure that involves liposuction, abdominoplasty, and breast surgery to restore your body shape and confidence after having children.

Who is a Candidate for Liposuction?
Most people with areas of unwanted fat qualify for liposuction, but it’s important to have realistic expectations for what we can accomplish with this cosmetic surgery. The ideal liposuction candidate is within 10-15 pounds of his or her goal weight and in good overall health. If you’re a smoker, you will need to quit prior to your liposuction through recovery. Some medications may need to be discontinued. As with any invasive procedure, there are potential risks such as infection and bleeding, fluid collection, and skin irregularities. Dr. Karlinsky will discuss your options, details of the procedure, and any risks during your consultation.
The Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction surgery takes 60-90 minutes from start to finish for most of our patients. If you choose to target multiple body areas at once with liposuction, your session time will be longer. During the lipo procedure, Dr. Karlinsky uses tumescent anesthesia—A numbing agent made up of salt water, lidocaine, and epinephrine (adrenaline)—to constrict the small blood vessels in the fat and reduce blood loss. This makes for a faster recovery and less painful procedure. Many of Dr. Karlinsky’s patients report feeling mild discomfort and a vibrating or tickling sensation in the treated body part as she reshapes the problem areas.
However, patients looking for significant fat removal will need to go under general anesthesia so your liposuction treatment will take place at our Manhattan surgical center. Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts provides transportation to and from our Manhattan office so you can focus on preparing and recovering from liposuction. Both forms of liposuction are outpatient procedures, so there’s no overnight stay required, but you will need to have someone available to drive you home and help you get settled.
What to Expect During Liposuction Recovery
You’ll likely feel mild to moderate pain following liposuction, and you may be sore for several weeks, but most patients go back to work within two or three days. If your profession involves heavy lifting or labor, Dr. Karlinsky may recommend taking a week away to allow your body to heal correctly. There will be a surgical garment which you need to wear for three weeks full time and another three weeks part-time. This helps your skin heal and provides a pain management benefit as well.
You’ll come into Westchester Cosmetic Surgical Arts for a follow-up appointment 24 hours after your cosmetic surgery to monitor how you’re doing and identify any issues immediately. Dr. Karlinsky gives her personal phone number to patients to maintain communication as complications can often be avoided when we’re both staying on top of your liposuction recovery. There’s another follow-up visit after one week and at three months, which is when Dr. Karlinsky will take your after photos.
There are a few ways you can prepare yourself and your home for liposuction recovery such as making and freezing nutritious meals ahead of time and creating a cozy area in the living room or bedroom where you can rest. Ask a friend or family member to drive you home the day of surgery and stay with you for the first day or so. If you have children, arrange for more help around the house so you can focus on healing and avoid putting too much strain on your body.
What is Tickle Lipo and Lunchtime Lipo?
Men and women who have small areas of unwanted fat may qualify to have Tickle Lipo. Dr. Karlinsky has coined the term “Lunchtime Lipo” because liposuction treatments with local, tumescent anesthesia can often be done over your lunch break at our Westchester location and you can return to work afterward. The Tickle Lipo is a cold lipo, not a laser, so there’s no risk of burn. The cannula used by our cosmetic surgeon moves up, down, and sideways quickly, creating vibrations that may tickle and allow it to move through the tissues easily. That causes less trauma and leads to less blood loss and pain during recovery.
Lunchtime Lipo is best for those who have localized areas of stubborn fat. You’ll need to avoid running and lifting heavy objects for one week, but most Tickle Lipo patients can return to normal activities after that. This liposuction option allows you to achieve your ideal figure on your lunch break without having to miss work.
What to Expect During Tickle Lipo Recovery
Recovery from Tickle Lipo is less extensive than traditional liposuction because it’s done over your lunch break and you can return to work. The procedure takes between one and two hours depending on the treated area(s), but there are no stitches required, just a band-aid and the incision site usually heals within 48 hours. You’ll still need to wear a surgical garment for one week full time and one week part time and stay in contact with Dr. Karlinsky about your progress.
