Gynecomastia Surgery in Westchester, NY
Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, removes enlarged or overdeveloped breasts in men. While most men never expect to get a gynecomastia procedure, it is quite common. In middle and older-aged men, as many as 65 percent of men develop gynecomastia. Gynecomastia can cause emotional and physical discomfort for a man. Luckily, gynecomastia surgery is a quick and straightforward fix that can significantly impact an individual.
What Causes Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia can impact men of all ages and for a variety of reasons. Some of the possible causes are:
- Hormonal changes (such as puberty)
- Anabolic steroids
- Obesity
- Drug use
- Some medications for high blood pressure, heart disease, prostate cancer, or HIV
- Genetics
Am I a Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?
Men who have experienced a negative impact on their self-esteem due to their enlarged breasts and are ready for a surgical solution are perfect candidates for gynecomastia surgery. It is preferred that the individual is in good health, does not smoke (or can quit), is close to their goal weight, and has realistic expectations for the results.
Book a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discover your candidacy for the surgery.
How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?
Patients are given intravenous sedation or general anesthesia before the procedure begins.
If your gynecomastia is only excess fatty tissue in the breast, it may be treated with liposuction.
If your gynecomastia case requires excess skin or glandular breast tissue to be removed, an excision technique will be used. This process is also recommended if the nipple (areola) needs to be reduced or repositioned. The incision location will vary depending on each patient’s individual needs.
Some patients will require a combination of excision and liposuction for optimal results.
What Is Recovery From Gynecomastia Surgery Like?
The length of your recovery will depend on which surgical techniques were used. Most men experience some tenderness, swelling, and bruising in the chest area. If you feel discomfort, it can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
Your chest will be wrapped in a compression garment to control swelling and promote blood circulation.
For patients who undergo liposuction only, they can return to work within one to two days. Men that undergo tissue excision may require four to five days off work. Strenuous exercise will need to be avoided for up to 10 days post-treatment, and heavy lifting should be avoided for four to six weeks.
You will visit your plastic surgeon for check-ins to make sure your recovery is on track.
What Results Can I Expect From Gynecomastia Surgery?
Results are immediate post-surgery, but it can take a few days or weeks for the swelling to subside. Gynecomastia surgery provides men with a slimmer and more defined chest.
